About the Artists

Drawn from the broad spectrum of New York’s classical scene, the Knights are an orchestra dedicated to cultivating collaborative musical performance and creatively engaging audiences in that endeavor. Led by an open-minded spirit of camaraderie and exploration, they expand the orchestral concert experience with programs that incorporate their roots in the Classical tradition, while also exploring their passion for musical discovery. Their experimental and audacious style has been noted by the New York Times, which praised the Knights in a recent review for their “careening, intense performance.” The “performance’s exuberance and rhythmic bite,” it noted, is in keeping with “the group’s thoughtful programming,” designed to both challenge and enthrall their audience.

The Knights’ characteristically collaborative spirit has led the orchestra to appear at the Wisconsin Union Theater with the famed Wu Man. Recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and as a leading ambassador of Chinese music, US-based, Chinese-born musician Wu Man has carved out a career creating and fostering projects that give this ancient instrument a new role in today’s music world—in fact, she not only introduced the instrument to new audiences, but commissioned and premiered over a hundred new works to increase the instrument’s repertoire. A Grammy Award-nominated artist, her musical passion has also led to her becoming a respected expert on the history and preservation of Chinese musical traditions, reflected in her recorded and live performances and multi-cultural collaborations.
