Chi-Animation All Stars: Animated Shorts from Chicago
Chi-Animation All Stars: Animated Shorts from Chicago
Thursday, Oct 01,  8:00 PM
Memorial Union - Play Circle
FREE
This collection of frame-by-frame explorations showcases works made in Chicago from 2005-present. As Chicago is a unique hotbed for underground and experimental animation, the program features an array of artists working in different modes of animation. For instance, Alexander Stewart's 16mm film 'Errata' was created using a photocopier to copy copies of copies. For Jon Satrom's digital video 'MEHOH 01A' data-mosh glitch processing was the technique at hand. Also seen in this program are hand-drawn character animations, lush abstractions, paint-on-glass, cut-out stop-motion, and puppetry; illustrating a multitude of Midwestern motion experiments. This program was curated by Chicago animator Jodie Mack, who will attend this screening along with several of the other featured artists!

He runs for office with lover Scott Smith as his campaign manager. Victory finally comes on the same day Dan White wins in the city's conservative district. The rest of the film sketches Milk's relationship with White and the 1978 fight against a statewide initiative to bar gays and their supporters from public school jobs.

USA, 2009 | Olatunde Osunsanmi | 35mm | PG-13
1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. Modern-day, Alaska, where-mysteriously since the 1960s-a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film. (adapted from imdb.com)

Traveling with its signature orchestra, this 85-member company is classically trained--and well-versed in Ukrainian folklore. Says the New York Times, "The young men in the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company are still soaring high in the air in splits, careering around the stage in gravity-defying butterfly jumps and spinning like tops in the 18th-century equivalent of break dancing! Any dance lover will appreciate the eye-opening level of technique that remains undiminished since the company first came [to New York City] in the 1970's. Vigor and power go with amazing lightness."

This performance of Pagoda will feature the Asian folklore and spirituality that inspire Li Chiao-Ping's contemporary/modern choreography. Like a temple pagoda, this concert will be a gathering of dances as acts of worship, contemplation, reflection, renewal and inspiration. Ms. Li will premiere two pieces in this program beside signature works Chi Sen, Untitled, Satori, Mandala and Feng Shui.

by Moliere, adapted by Arrie Callahan Directed by Patricia Boyette Cough! Wheeze! Gasp! Argan, a miserly hypochondriac, wants his daughter, Angelique, to marry a doctor¿for the free medical care. This new translation of Moliere¿s farcical comedy pokes fun at the medical profession, family corruption, and absurdities in familial duty. Produced in the Steampunk aesthetic, a fantastical spin Victorian decadence and turn-of-the-century industrialization, this costume drama will delight through its combination of satiric commentary, physical farce, and stunning visuals.

A Jam Band active since 1995, The Disco Biscuits play a distinct blend of rock, techno, jazz, soul, blues and classical music that quickly took them to the upper echelon of the jam-roots-groove scene. The band began at the University of Pennsylvania by Sam Altman, Aron Magner, Marc Brownstein and Jon Gutwillig. They are now in there second decade as one of the most successful jam bands in the country. They released their debut album in 1996, entitled Encephalous Crime and in 1998 they were signed to hydrophonics records and released their fourth album, The Wind at Four to Fly on SCI Fidelity Records. Critics have said that they are "a group holding true to its jamtronica roots but now willing and quite able of taking what their sound used to be and making it bigger, better and more refined." Chicago's Orchard Lounge is a dj trio that appeals to open-minded and diverse audiences. Ott is a Dub, Electronica band from the UK. He has been making music for the last 20 years for acts like, Sinead O'Conner, The Orb, and Brian Eno.
