5th Annual Turkish Film Festival: Black Dogs Barking
Saturday, Nov 14,  12:00 PM
Memorial Union - Play Circle
Free
Black Dogs Barking, the first feature film from director, Mehmet Bahadr Er, is the story of two best friends, Selim and Caa whose dreams of wealth turn to nightmares when they get involved with the local mafia. The two troublemakers live on the outskirts of Istanbul where they spend their days raising pet pigeons, and hanging out with their aimless friends. When the cash-strapped friends decide to start a parking lot business near a high-end shopping center, they get a local crime mob to finance the project. Things get out of hand when the police discover their involvement in the underground scene. Filmed in the neighborhood where he spent many years of his life, Bahadr Er beautifully brings his experiences and relationships to life on the big screen. All films are shown with English subtitles.

Three Monkeys is a film you digest. It repeats in your thoughts after you've seen it. Much of it works in silence. Characters think their way through it. But you always know what they are feeling. Ceylan is so in tune with his characters, he can write inner thoughts large on screen. ~Paul Lynch (Sunday Tribune). All films are shown with English subtitles.

USA, 2009 | Marc Webb | 95 min | 35mm | PG-13
After it looks as if she's left his life for good this time, Tom Hansen reflects back on the just over one year that he knew Summer Finn. Despite being physically average in almost every respect, Summer had always attracted the attention of men, Tom included. For Tom, it was love at first sight when she walked into the greeting card company where he worked, she the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knew that Summer was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer did not believe in relationships or boyfriends - in her assertion, real life will always ultimately get in the way - Tom and Summer became more than just friends. Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer's so-called relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it is Tom's adolescent sister, Rachel, who is his voice of reason. After all is said and done, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not. (adaped from imdb.com)

November 14 | USA, 1996 | 73min | Jim Mallon | DVD | PG13
The mad and evil scientist, Dr. Clayton Forrester, has created an evil little scheme that is bound to give him world global domination. Having shot Mike Nelson and his robots into space, Dr. Forrester plans to torment Mike Nelson and the robots by sending them a real stinker of a film called, "This Island Earth." He is convinced that this movie will drive them insane. And since the guys cannot control when the movie begins or ends, they are forced to witness the true horror that is This Island Earth, an awful movie with a lobster-clawed, bug-eyed creature dressed in slacks. But will this be the ultimate cheese that breaks the boys' spirits? It's up to one test subject's quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and utter intolerance for cinematic garbage to foil the plans of the scientist and to save the Earth. (from IMDb)
