by Moliere, adapted by Arrie Callahan
Directed by Patricia Boyette
Cough! Wheeze! Gasp! Argan, a miserly hypochondriac, wants his daughter, Angelique, to marry a doctor¿for the free medical care. This new translation of Moliere¿s farcical comedy pokes fun at the medical profession, family corruption, and absurdities in familial duty. Produced in the Steampunk aesthetic, a fantastical spin Victorian decadence and turn-of-the-century industrialization, this costume drama will delight through its combination of satiric commentary, physical farce, and stunning visuals.
Featuring rare documentary footage, video art, and a live dance tribute, Starlight presents this special event in honor of legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham, who passed away this summer. The evening will culminate as UW-Madison dancer Brittany Wittmann performs an original, self-choreographed dance piece in dedication to Merce, drawing inspiration from her experiences while studying at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio. In the spirit of Merce's highly collaborative and avant-garde nature, this performance will also feature live processed video projections and improvised, experimental music by Madison artists. But first we will take a closer look at the historical significance of this great artist via footage from Elliot Caplan¿s film Cage/Cunningham. And then we have the privilege of screening Merce by Merce by Paik, a two-part video art piece by Nam June Paik, showcasing Merce's involvement with early video art. Here, Paik questions art, life and time through video, as his electronic manipulations cause time and space to be layered and transformed. Blue Studio: Five Segments is a groundbreaking work of videodance by Cunningham and artist Charles Atlas, in which Cunningham is multiplied, overlaid and transported from the studio to a series of unexpected landscapes. Cunningham's gestural dance is manipulated to the accompaniment of a disjunctive soundtrack that includes the voices of John Cage and Jasper Johns. In Merce and Marcel, Paik creates a densely textured, transcultural collage that pays tribute to Cunningham and Duchamp by addressing the relationship of art and life.
